We have tons of energy, we are pure energy. If we choose to recall and revisit past occurrences, we are simply feeding them which ultimately makes those past occurrences stronger and more prevalent. Who wants to hold on to old energy? To do so weakens and prevents us from being in the moment within the continual evolutionary act of creation or co-creation. You must recapitulate.
– Nayeli, Becoming Awareness
Early one morning in late June, Nayeli and I left her house to wander through the Sonoran Desert and harvest the luscious fruit of the saguaro cactus. The Sonoran Desert is the only place in the world where saguaros grow, and we are so fortunate and grateful to have access to this delicious fruit. We wore strong, sturdy hiking boots to maneuver through the desert brambles, prickly pear cactus, and the rocky arroyos. We each carried a citrus fruit picker, a pole that had a large wicker basket at the end. These pickers enabled us to reach up about twelve feet to retrieve the fruits of our labor. It also served as a staff to help us keep our balance through the arroyos, and as Nayeli said instilling a bit of fear, a tool with which to flick away any rattlesnakes we encountered.
We left at four-thirty in the morning to ensure that we would return home no later than nine a.m. since the summer heat is so harsh while enduring any amount of activity. Before we began to collect the fruit, Nayeli took out a small packet of bee pollen and left some as an offering at the base of the first saguaro we encountered that bore fruit. She said a simple statement of gratitude for this gift from the Earth.
As we began to harvest the beautiful bright pink fruits, Nayeli talked about the necessity of reclaiming the energy that was taken from me as well as that which I had squandered, relinquished willingly, or disbursed throughout my lifetime. She explained that reclaiming energy is a process through which we essentially recapture all of the energies we expended in the past. This restoration includes interactions with people and any emotions, good, bad or neutral, that arise throughout our lives. She said this is best accomplished when we start in the present and then follow our memories back to the earliest time that we could remember.
“How is it possible to follow our memories all the way back to the beginning of our life?” I asked, feeling a bit daunted by such a momentous task.
“When we start to reclaim our energy it is restored and as a result we increase our current energetic structure. As we continue this important process, we gain more and more energy. Over time, we restore our life-force energy to its original whole and complete configuration through which we became manifest in human form,” she said matter-of-factly.
“Reclaiming energy works when we completely release the energies that keep us bound to specific incidences in our lives. These cause us to become trapped within a vicious cycle of replaying repetitive and draining emotional conflict. The continual rehashing of patterns causes our life-force energy to be constantly wasted.”
“So what you’re saying, Nayeli, is that the energy that we have expended in various situations throughout our lives may cause us to perpetuate old stories?”
“Exactly,” she said as she placed several saguaro fruits into her basket. “People have a strong tendency to remain fixated upon certain stories and events that already occurred in their lives. This even applies to pleasurable and gratifying experiences that they attempt to experience again and again only to find that they are unable to recreate the event. Their energy became trapped in the original experience, and they find themselves attached to a specific outcome. Unable to repeat the situation with the profundity they experienced the first time it occurred leaves them feeling unfulfilled and emotionally drained.”
I thought about events in my own life that I had tried to recreate for the simple fact that they were so enjoyable, and how repetitive attempts to retrieve them always seemed to leave me feeling dissatisfied and even irritable.
“We have tons of energy, we are pure energy,” Nayeli said excitedly. “The practice of reclaiming energy means to take back and recover lost energy. And it’s easy! All we have to do is start by taking some time out of our day with clear intention of essentially reclaiming our power. As we reclaim power we free up the energy that makes it possible for us to see more examples of where or to whom we lose energy and then we just keep recapitulating.
“To avoid this practice prevents us from freeing ourselves of these old energies and personal stories. This can cause our bodies to have energetic blockages which may eventually lead to depression, anxiety, fear, sadness, illness and disease. On the other hand, to free ourselves from these old energies enables us to have excess power, which allows for creativity to flow easily. This fluidity provides us with feelings of well-being and increased awareness.”
“How do you erase all of those memories from your mind?” I asked.
“You are not erasing them from your mind and you are not denying that they existed. What you are doing is returning to your own vital and essential life-force energy that you were born with but have lost throughout the years. You must pull back all of your lost energy into the center of your being to become unattached from the situations to which you had lost the energy in order to be free. Think of it as cleaning your links to power. It is a matter of restoration and renewal.”
