Aligning with Intent

He told me that, from the moment when the explosion which gave us origin occurred, until the moment of our death, we live within a flow. Those two episodes are unique, because they prepare us for the encounter of what lies further ahead. And what aligns us with that flow? An incessant battle, which only a warrior will attempt. Because of that, he lives in profound harmony with everything. For a warrior, to be harmonious is to flow, not to stop in the middle of the current and try to make a space of artificial and impossible peace. He knows that he can only give the very best of himself under conditions of maximum tension. ~ Carlos Castaneda, Encounters with the Nagual

Aligning with intent has been the primary focus of my work for the past couple of months. It has been difficult trying to find the words to describe it. Aligning with intent differs vastly from connecting with intent or creating intent. While we can will ourselves to connect with intent (to see) and create with intent (to know), in order to align with intent one must arduously recapitulate (in the moment), erase even more personal history (the stuff we thought was “knowledge”) and zealously unplug from the foreign installation. In order to align with intent, we must have tons of energy and personal power. The foreign installation is so generationally ingrained that it seems as though we are stripping away the very cornerstone of our reality. And we are. Herein lies the incessant battle of the warrior.

Living in a Self-Aware Universe

The objective of the Rule of the nagual is to generate parties; that is, self-aware organisms capable of flying into the immensity out there. Such organisms are made up by the sum of a group of warriors who have harmonized their individual intents. The purpose of that design is to perpetuate a non-human dimension of awareness. ~ Carlos Castaneda, Encounters with the Nagual

I’ve been reading this quote and looking at it from multiple perspectives. Not too long ago I said, yes…we must assemble a new band of awareness to ensure that we can leap into freedom when death comes knocking on our door and exist as pure energetic awareness without repeating the patterns by repositioning ourselves, again, in the karmic wheel of life. I said that it is important to create energetic hubs of awareness that will allow us to move completely beyond the fixated assemblage point of reason. I said a lot of things and now I find myself moving beyond those thoughts, ideas and sensate intuitions. For this reason, and I’ve said this before, don’t believe anything I say.

Going Deeper

It is nearly incomprehensible to realize what the new seers have accomplished. These impeccable warrior-sorcerers have outlined the essence of a path to the threshold of power itself! They have carried the realization of power’s promise beyond the flaw with words, and actualized it as an empirical aspect of the human experience. These soldiers of the third attention have accomplished a miraculous journey that every human being longs to make. They have returned to the abstract in a state of total awareness. They have burned with the fire from within and flown into eternity on the incomprehensible wings of intent. ~ Creative Victory, Tomas

Riding the Plumed Serpent

Quetzalcoatl. Mention that name and the plumed serpent comes to mind because that’s what Quetzalcoatl means. Along with many stories and interpretations of them. Quetzalcoatl has arrived, for all intents and purposes, as the next salvation myth. Creator sky god, bringer of peace and harmony, representative of good and light. Bridge between heaven and earth, priest of learning and knowledge. Symbol of authority. Heck, I even found a Wikipedia link that actually says, Some Mormon scholars believe that Quetzalcoatl, who has been described as a white, bearded god who came from the sky and promised to return, was actually Jesus Christ. Whatever gets you through the night.

On my recent journey to the Yucatan I became inspired to do a piece of artwork that incorporates the plumed serpent. I’ve been sitting with the image in my mind for some time because what I saw does not look like the interpreted art that has been created. In fact, I don’t even know if I will be able to draw the image shown to me because it is so abstract.

Units of Perception

Units of perception means that, since we are autonomous beings, our perception could also be autonomous. But it is not, because by coming to an agreement with our fellow men, we all perceive the same thing. That extraordinary ability, which began as a voluntary consent aimed at survival, has ended up tying us to our own descriptions. ~ Carlos Castaneda, Encounters with the Nagual

That said, I would like to explore enlightenment, a concept that is the goal of many. Enlightenment is described as a state of blissful liberation that includes detachment, emptiness, silence and peaceful being. It promises freedom from all suffering, never-ending happiness and unsolicited joy and is most often depicted with a person sitting cross-legged, eyes closed, oozing compassion with a serene look on their face and sun rays and halos illuminating them from behind. The image may vary slightly, some with chakras ablaze, fractal universes or angelic trumpeting from a carpet of clouds. Really? Well, I guess so, for some. This idea, this concept of enlightenment is very limiting and has the potential through its definition to prevent the most enlightened beings from realizing that they are. Worse, it provides a concrete definition wrought with expectations and narrow single-mindedness that encourages others to feel obligated to live up to a concept and as such produces a bunch of phonies. Here’s the story the way I see it. People strive to become enlightened, to attain the supreme state of detachment and utter bliss. Many claim they achieve it and project their joy onto the world with lofty attitudes, breathy voices and various techniques with promises for success. However, some seekers find themselves striving and striving repetitively, caught in the pattern that holds them to chasing after yet another carrot dangling in front of them. The über carrot.

To the Vastness

Dying is a monumental affair. It is more than kicking your legs and becoming stiff. You will dance to your death here, on this hilltop, at the end of the day. And in your last dance you will tell of your struggle, of the battles you have won and of those you have lost; you will tell of your joys and bewilderments upon encountering personal power. Your dance will tell about the secrets and about the marvels you have stored. And your death will sit here and watch you. The dying sun will glow on you without burning, as it has done today. The wind will be soft and mellow and your hilltop will tremble. As you reach the end of your dance you will look at the sun, for you will never see it again in waking or in dreaming, and then your death will point to the south. To the vastness. ~ don Juan, Journey to Ixtlan

A warrior on the Toltec path (though she would no longer refer to herself as such) recently asked me, “Looking back… do you think you’ve told a good story overall? A great campfire tale, with heroes and villains, challenges and fears faced and overcome? Treasures won and loves lost?

Floating in the Sea of Awareness

Don Juan had defined the concept of warrior-travelers, saying that it referred to sorcerers who, by being warriors, traveled in the dark sea of awareness. He had added that human beings were travelers of the dark sea of awareness, and that this Earth was but a station on their journey; for extraneous reasons, which he didn’t care to divulge at the time, the travelers had interrupted their voyage. He said that human beings were caught in a sort of eddy, a current that went in circles, giving them the impression of moving while they were, in essence, stationary. He maintained that sorcerers were the only opponents of whatever force kept human beings prisoners, and that by means of their discipline sorcerers broke loose from its grip and continued their journey of awareness. ~ Carlos Castaneda, The Active Side of Infinity

I believe that I read a similar interpretation of this in a book I read by Ken Carey, maybe in The Third Millennium: Living in the Posthistoric World. Carey, who had an apparent connection to the works of Castaneda which is evident in his writing, said something about how the Earth was a travel destination for universal beings, a place where they stopped to refuel, refresh and explore and that one day, a predatory race came to earth, never left and took over. If this is true then it may well explain the alien petroglyphs that have been found carved in stone around the world. Perhaps this was their “I was here” mark, much like people carve their initials in trees. Or maybe, they were depictions carved based on what those who inhabited earth at that time saw. Or both.

Life’s How-To Guide

The thing that makes some warriors fight to retain their self is something unrelated to personal concerns. To belong to a lineage of power implies bonds of such a deep nature that our personality is annulled. In that situation, individual choice no longer exists for the warrior, properly speaking. All he can do is accept his destiny and fulfill the commands of the Rule; anything else would just lead to his extinction. ~ Don Juan, Encounters with the Nagual

Awaken to your life’s purpose, be patient, forgive, embrace pain, meditate, transform, transcend, go-within, change, release, heal, pray, focus, create your reality, believe, hope, be positive, do yoga, find inner peace, let go of desire… in other words become like everyone else in a spiritual way. There are guidebooks, gurus, classes, workshops and how-to-guides all over the internet including instructions on How to Become More Spiritual on eHow, rated as “moderately easy”.

Consensual Reality

The sorcerers’ revolution is that they refuse to honor agreements in which they did not participate. Nobody ever asked me if I would consent to be eaten by beings of a different kind of awareness. My parents just brought me into this world to be food, like themselves, and that’s the end of the story. ~ Don Juan, The Active Side of Infinity

In The Teachings of Don Juan, Carlos talks about ordinary consensus as the implicit agreement on the component elements of everyday life which fellow men give to one another in various ways. We come into the world to parents and others who socialize us by convincing us that the descriptions we agree upon define the limits of the real world. And that we must agree. This is social consensus, an agreement that we make to uphold a single reality that consists of one limited way of seeing the entire world.
